"Hey, I'm sorry I can't be there with you in LA, I wish I was. I'm here in Melbourne, Australia, making a movie about a bunch of Irish outlaws, which is quite mad. I'm flattered and uh, thanks. Um, the experience of working on Lord of the Rings was truly life changing, and I have to thank Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, their creative team, everyone involved in making the movie, couldn't be done without them. Robert DeNiro's performance in this movie seems to go beyond performance: he sinks so deeply into the role of Jake LaMotta that you almost forget he's DeNiro. It's not a likable performance, and it's not an especially likable film (the fight sequences still make me wince), but it is perhaps the high point of his career.
